Phyworks 1G and 10G chips drive next generation optical module design

Phyworks has announced it is to showcase two new products at this year’s OFC NFOEC event. Targeting next generation optical module design, a $1 laser driver/amplifier and a 10GBASE-LRM compliant retimer with Electronic Dispersion Compensation (EDC) promise higher performance and significant reductions in component count and PCB size.

The first of its kind to be offered at $1 in volume, the PHY1040 is a highly integrated laser/VCSEL driver and limiting amplifier IC for small form factor optical modules operating between 125Mbps and 1.25Gbps. The chip will be demonstrated in an SFP reference design functioning as a continuous mode VCSEL driver running receive and transmit stages simultaneously at 1.25Gbps.

Also to be demonstrated at the exposition is the PHY2060, a fully 10GBASE-LRM compliant serial retiming receiver with EDC. Manufactured on a CMOS process, this second-generation Phyworks chip is higher in performance, smaller in size and easier to integrate than alternative solutions. The chip will be shown in use on an SFP+ line card transmitting across multimode fibre at a full 10Gbps.
