Phyworks' Announces High Linearity, EDC Optimized 10Gb/s TIA

Bristol, UK, September 26, 2005. Phyworks, the advanced optical networking semiconductor specialist, has added to its Electronic Dispersion Compensation (EDC) integrated circuit (IC) solution, the first commercially available linear 10Gb/s transimpedance amplifier (TIA) specifically designed to enable a compliant IEEE 10GBASE-LRM (LRM) receive signal path.

With the announcement of the PHY1090 TIA to complement its CMOS PHY1060 EDC-enabled re-timer IC, Phyworks will be the first company to offer the complete EDC receive path solution, thus offering unprecedented performance in legacy enterprise fiber applications. While the EDC IC has been the primary LRM focus of Phyworks' competitors, the need for a new class of linear TIA for optimum EDC operation has been largely overlooked, or viewed as "the module vendor's problem". To address this need, the PHY1090 TIA employs innovative design techniques to deliver a low noise, high linearity output over the entire LRM input optical dynamic range, thus maximizing available EDC link margin. The PHY1090 achieves in excess of -19dBm sensitivity, and delivers better than 2dB electrical compression performance over the entire LRM optical dynamic range. At the LRM stressed sensitivity level of -6.5dBm optical modulation amplitude (OMA), the device delivers 0.25dB compression performance. This low noise and high linearity performance is achieved at only 150mW power dissipation. The PHY1090 also features a novel receive signal strength indicator output which enables module designers to directly implement diagnostic reporting based upon OMA as is consistent with the LRM standard, rather than necessitating the post-processing of the traditional measurement of average power.

Commenting, Chet Babla, Product Manager at Phyworks, said, "Phyworks believes that the PHY1090 TIA, in conjunction with Phyworks' PHY1060 EDC-enabled re-timer, paves the way to optimal cost, power and performance tradeoffs for 10Gb/s enterprise networking over 300 metres of installed legacy fiber. With this breakthrough TIA innovation, and in conjunction with upcoming 10Gb/s IC products, Phyworks continues its support for sub-$200 10Gbps optical modules".

Availability and Pricing

The PHY1090 TIA is currently sampling select Phyworks customers. Volume pricing is under $10.00 per TIA chip.
