Phyworks is developing technologies designed to increase performance while reducing the overall cost and power of fiber optic modules for LAN, SAN, WAN and FTTx applications. To address these issues, Phyworks has developed unique performance enhancing EDC technology for 10Gbps and highly integrated, high performance PMD devices from 1Gbps to 10Gbps.
Electronic Dispersion Technology (EDC)
Our proprietary EDC technology is the only cost effective solution for mitigating Modal Dispersion over the installed base of multimode fiber deployed in LAN’s, thus achieving 300m link distances. Phyworks serial EDC IC replaces the existing CDR in an XFP module; no extra ICs, or cost, is added to the system. It is housed in a very small 5mm X 5mm package consuming less than 0.6W of power. Our EDC technology is fully automatic, featuring approximately 100K gates of digital logic controlling the CDR’s phase adjustment, quantizer slicing levels and EDC adaptation algorithms. The EDC also includes advanced features such as PRBS and BERT capabilities to ease production testing of the optical modules as well as automatic low cost link testing in the field. Our EDC technology can also be used to cost efficiently address Chromatic and Polarization Mode Dispersions in singlemode fiber and thereby also extend the reach in Wide Area Networks. To address these telecom applications, Phyworks has also developed SerDes IC technology suitable for 300 pin transponders and line cards.
Physical Medium Dependent ICs (PMD ICs)
The Fibre Channel market has moved from 1 to 2 and now to 4Gbps in the course of a few years. 1, 2 and 4Gbps optical modules, including gigabit Ethernet, are essentially the same modules, with pricing at the lowest common denominator, 1Gbps. Phyworks developed the world’s first commercially available multirate integrated transmitter and receiver ICs for these markets. This technology is available now and built into the latest optical modules available today. We cut IC costs by more than 50% for our customers, as well as module manufacturing costs. We improve performance of optical modules across all data rates. We offer both VCSEL and edge emitter variants as well as products tailored for burst mode applications, such as the FTTx market. Phyworks has also developed companion multi-rate TIAs.
Phyworks has in development a PMD product line for 10Gbps. These devices target further integration (of transmit side retimers for example) and cost reductions of 10Gbps optical modules.
