Equalization

Limited bandwidth in any communications channel – be it optical fibre or copper cabling - introduces errors as the signal spreads out through the channel. This either reduces the data rate or reduces the distance the signal can travel at a particular rate.

These errors or intersymbol interference (ISI) have become far more significant an issue as the industry has moved to higher data rates, of 10Gbps and above. Phyworks’ proprietary adaptive equalisation technology is the world’s first to effectively deal with the problem.

Integrated into our PHY2060 retimer/equalizer chip, our high performance equalization technology is the first to bring true 10GBASE-LRM compliance to legacy fibre links up to 300m in length and the first to enable active twin-ax copper interconnects over 24 to 30AWG cables of up to 30m.

Bringing the advantage of longer reach and lower power to 10G optical fibre and making 10G copper happen at an acceptable cost and low power, our technology is being integrated into X2, XFP and SFP+ communication modules and is set to move on-card in the creation of the 10G backplanes of tomorrow.

As intellectual property of course our equalization technology will find its way into the world’s market leading system ASIC and switch IC developments. Designed and built in digital CMOS, our technology will port to 90nm, 65nm and 45nm geometries, enabling yet higher integration and even more power saving.
